But self-taught routes had their champions too: nearly a third (29%) swore by learning through practice, 16% recommended YouTube tutorials, and 5% leaned toward paid online courses.
As one designer, Cara Baker, put it:
“Design school helped me the most… but most of what I learned could be found online if you have the tenacity to find it.”
The message? There’s no single “correct” path — choose the one that matches your resources and learning style, then commit fully.
Getting the Fundamentals Right
When asked what beginners should focus on first, 59% of designers said color and layout basics matter more than anything else.
Learning the latest software is useful (24% voted for tools), but as Pat Branch, a creative director, pointed out:
“Basic design before tools.”

The AI Question
Finally, we asked the big one: Will AI replace graphic designers?
The overwhelming majority — 66% — said AI will change the role, not replace it. Another 22% believe creativity is uniquely human, while only 8% see replacement as inevitable.
Mike Mirabella, a creative director, offered an optimistic perspective:
“True creativity and design will be served by AI… but not replace designers. AI is soulless, and can remind us that our true value is much more than compositions and output.”
